Vacationing is a great time to relax, escape, and have fun. Here are a few suggestions to incorporate staying healthy into your vacation and returning home feeling good and as healthy as you were when you left.

  1. Eat before you go to the airport. Avoid getting hungry and having to eat at the food court while waiting for your flight.
  2. Pack healthy snacks to eat while you’re traveling. It saves money and it ensures you have healthy foods on hand to hold you over until you arrive at your destination.
  3. When you arrive make a trip to the grocery store so that not every meal has to be eaten out. Make sure to check with the hotel before you leave to see if the rooms have a mini fridge or kitchenette.
  4. Stick to as much of your regular routine as possible without missing out on the fun and relaxation of vacationing.
  5. Go for a bike ride or a walk to see the sights. Some places might offer bike tours. Just imagine a morning walk at the beach, in a new city or a nearby town.
  6. When making hotel reservations find out if there is a fitness center in the hotel and ask about safe running routes or park that is close enough to walk to. Whether in the hotel fitness center, a run from the hotel or a body weight workout at a park, they’re all great ways to get in a 30-40 minute workout that doesn’t conflict with plans for the day. This works especially well if the family likes to sleep in and you have some time in the morning.
  7. Plan a vacation around a competition or race.
  8. Don’t indulge in sweet treats at every meal.
  9. Don’t forget about drinking plenty of water and stay hydrated.
  10. Drink alcohol in moderation and avoid an abundance of empty calories.

  16. I’ve never done a bike tour, but would totally love to do one. I usually try to do a bit of a workout or two when I’m on vacation – pack the resistance band and make sure my running shoes are with me. We even did 2 workouts on the honeymoon and ALOT of walking!

    1. Hi Jen. Packing the running shoes is a must. The bike tours are fun and my kids like them too. Score!

  17. I love all of these tips. I just spent most of the last month traveling and incorporated many of these points. I also found it helpful to eat lots of fruits and veggies instead of filling up on unhealthy snacks!

  20. Yay for the biking/walking + packing snacks, and I am so with you on hotels with fitness centers or cool active things to do nearby. Priorities! 😛

    1. Hi Farrah. Whatever is important to you, you’ll make it work AND have fun too 🙂

  21. Bringing your own snacks AND your own (empty) water bottle to the airport is so helpful – for your caloric intake and your wallet 🙂 I hate how expensive the airport food can get! I would love to go on a run-cation over the winter and run a race in a warm place. Now I just have to talk my husband into it!

    1. Airport food is crazy expensive and isn’t usually very good. Start now convincing your husband to go on a runcation and you’ll have him convinced by winter. Good luck 🙂

  22. Love these tips! Especially the reminder to eat before your flight, and packing snacks. My protein powder always gets lots of funny looks 😉

    1. I bet it does Becki 🙂 haha I’ve seen funny faces when they check my bag and see the snack stash.

  23. I find vacation my favorite time to run- best way to explore a new place. The tough part for me is eating healthy and making good choices about food in general. These are awesome tips Jill!

  24. Great tips you have here. I find that being prepared always helps. Especially having healthy snacks on hand.

    1. Thanks Ivanna. I keep a healthy snack stash in my purse even when I’m not traveling. Always a good idea 🙂

  25. The access to a fridge or kitchen makes such a huge difference when it comes to eating healthy on the road.
Though when I’m exploring a new place, sometimes it can be nice to cut myself some slack and focus on enjoying rather than being consumed with needing to eat healthy.

    1. I agree Ange. It’s a balance of not overindulging and not over healthy. I feel so much better and have more fun when I look at it that way.

  26. So many good tips here Jill. I especially like the ones about going to the market when you get there and booking a place with a gym. Two things I’ve always sworn by.

    1. Hi Megan. I search for a nearby Whole Foods before we leave. They have an awesome variety of stores in different cities. Ok, that sounded way too geeky 🙂

  27. I always take sneakers and go explore dirig a vacation. Great tio to ask the front desk for routes. We try to always book a room with a small kitchen Id possible. I get quite bloated and cranky if every meal is a meal out. Sometimes I just want yogurt and fresh fruit you know?? Great tips!!

    1. Exactly! I can definitely feel a difference if I eat out too often. The front desk doesn’t seem to be asked often but they’re always happy to help find parks and running routes 🙂

  28. Yes! I always end up hungry at the airport. It’s a disaster. Lol. Not this time!

    1. I know! The food isn’t good and it’s expensive. Not to mention difficult to find gf options.

  29. I’m with you on finding routes to hike, bike, or run and staying hydrated (on good, filtered water) 🙂 On vacation I probably do eat something sweet with every meal, though. 😉

  30. I love to stick to my feet on vacation! For me it is the easiest way to get around and keep moving! We always travel with snacks, I like to eat about every 4 hours or so , so I need to keep some good choices with me 🙂 I do plan on trying new foods and trying new activities so I think it all balances out in the end!

    1. Hi Mary Beth. Keeping it balanced is key. Not overindulging and not overly healthy. Sounds good to me 🙂

  31. I’m a big fan of doing active things on vacation, drinking lots of water on trips and bringing some healthy snacks for travel.
I also try to cut myself a break on vacation and allow for indulgences!

  32. When my husband and I are traveling, we always go to the store to get at least our own breakfast and snacks, unless a continental breakfast is included at the hotel. Not only does this save money, but its also much healthier than eating all 3 meals out.

    1. I never eat breakfast out when we travel. It’s too hard to find something I like that is GF. Actually the whole family rarely eats breakfast out when we travel. It’s too easy to find convenient breakfast foods that everyone likes and like you said, we save money.

  33. Being healthy while traveling is almost like a fun little challenge to see how you can be creative in staying active and not overindulging yet still have fun!

I couldn’t agree with you more on all of your tips, especially the eating before you get to the airport. I always bring snacks with me for the plane ride and a water bottle to keep hydrate, prior to departure, during the flight and after arrival.

  35. I always always eat before the airport, and bring a lunch with me 🙂 and i love being “active” on vacation, walking is an awesome alternative always!

  36. I’m all about healthy and active travel–I always get so much more out of the experience that way!
