Merry Merry Christmas Survey

Thinking About Christmas

I’ve been looking forward to sharing a few things I’m loving right now but decided to wait. The chance to blog a Christmas theme is limited. Sure, I could blog about Christmas anytime of the year but that would just be weird and out of place. A Christmas post in August just isn’t the same.

So, instead, I decided to take advantage of the seasonal opportunity and share an idea I stole borrowed from Amanda at Running With Spoons.

Egg Nog or hot chocolate?
Neither, but one of my favorite holiday memories is making big red cups of hot chocolate for my kids when they came inside from playing in the snow.

Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
Definitely wrapped! Part of the fun on Christmas morning is the unwrapping.

Colored lights on tree/house or white?
Decorating inside we might use color lights every now and then but my preference is white. Outside? Always white! Classic white with wreaths and red bows.

Do you hang mistletoe?
No and I don’t think I ever have. Come to think about it I’ve never actually stood under mistletoe.

When do you hang your decorations up?
We have December 5 and 8 birthdays and a soon as the birthdays have passed and the celebrations are over we’re ready to deck the halls. Not a day before.

What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?
Turkey (especially with my new crockpot recipe) and stuffed acorn squash rings. Yum! I make enough to be sure I have leftovers.

Favourite holiday memory as a child?
Opening a gift on Christmas Eve with the excitement and anticipation of Santa coming the next morning.

What is on your Christmas wish-list?
Nothing really. Time with my family is always on my wish-list.

Do you open a gifts on Christmas Eve?
Yes! It started when I was a kid and I’ve continued the tradition with my kids.

How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
I love themed trees. My family loves the hodge podge of decorations we’ve collected over the years. I either decorate multiple tress to have both or we alternate year to year.

Snow? Love it or dread it?
Honestly, as beautiful as it is, I’d be happier without it. I’m meant to be back in California where a chance of snow is slim to none.

Real tree or fake tree?
Fake tree in the Conyers’ house. I love the fragrance of a real tree but I don’t love the mess and clean up. A fake tree and candles work well to have the best of both worlds 🙂

Do you remember your favorite gift?
A pink bike. I remember thinking it was the most beautiful thing under the tree.

What’s the most important thing about Christmas for you?
Family and tradition.

What is your favourite holiday dessert?
Without a doubt pumpkin pie. I love the traditional pumpkin pie but my gluten free, Perfect Pumpkin Pie with Crumbled Crust Topping recipe is just as good, maybe even better!

What is your favourite tradition?
Our Christmas Eve dinner party. The hustle and bustle, errands, and shopping are all done. The focus is 100% on good food, family and relaxing.

What tops your tree?
A star that I’m not fond of. It’s just too small for the tree but it’s the only topper we have that goes with the decorations this year. I already have plans to hit the sales and buy a new one the day after Christmas.

Which do you prefer, giving or receiving?
I admit receiving is nice but I love the giving, especially to my kids.

What is your favorite Christmas song?
I love love Christmas music and play it constantly. I seem to be into Jazz Christmas music this year but my all time favorite is anything by Trans Siberian Orchestra.

Candy canes, yuck or yum?
Take it or leave it. I haven’t eaten one in years.

Favorite Christmas Movie?
Albert Finney’s Scrooge. Every year we watch it on Christmas Day.

What do you leave for Santa?
Milk and Christmas cookies my kids make with their grandmother.

Do you have a Christmas morning tradition?
We’re up early to open gifts, have a special breakfast together, watch Christmas movies and do Christmas puzzles together. Breakfast includes fresh squeezed orange juice. It’s a tradition my husband started with our son when he was small enough to sit on the counter.

Do you prefer to shop online or at the mall?
I love everything about the mall during this time of year. The crowds, music, decorations and energy!

Christmas letter or Christmas card?
Christmas cards and for many years I made my own.

I’m linking up with Thinking Out Loud at Running with Spoons. I wonder who else is thinking out loud about Christmas?

be the best version of YOU

  1. I just saw this idea on Road Runner Girl’s blog in which she pointed out your blog and survey. What a GREAT idea! I love to read about other traditions! I have also been in search of some inspiration for a blog post and this is it! Thanks for sharing the idea! Merry Christmas!

  2. What a fun post! I would have answered a lot of the questions the same way as you too! I LOVE making my kids hot chocolate after playing in the snow so much! I’m totally not a fan of the star on our tree and will be looking for a new one after Christmas as well!

  3. Trans Siberian Orchestra has such amazing Christmas music. And I love that you’re big on celebrating Christmas Eve — that’s definitely my favourite day, and I remember that my mom would always let me open one present before dinner when I was a little kid so that I would stop bugging her about it 😆

  4. We do table presents on Christmas Eve which is always a lot of fun! As far as Christmas lights I still can’t get away from using colored lights on my tree, reminds me of my childhood 🙂

  5. This is a pretty good survey and to answer these questions in my head brings a smile to my face. Oh I love this time of year. It took some time for me to love it (not until I had a family of my own) but now it is a very special time.

  6. I’ve heard a lot of “does Santa wrap presents” discussions lately. My parents never wrapped presents from Santa but wrapped the gifts that they gave us! Too funny how everyone thinks of it differently 🙂

  7. Love love love egg nog and would drink it all year round. Seriously.

Fun survey – always interesting to see how different people celebrate.

  8. Where did you find the lights(stars) on your tree? So pretty!

  9. fun post! it is always fun to hear about other people’s traditions. I love white lights! I am also terrible about sending out cards because the kids are out of the house. Pretty pics and yuck on egg nog 🙂 I love mimosas on Christmas morning!

  10. Fun post!
We wrap presents but not stocking stuff. And, we open our presents on Christmas Eve – we usually spend the entire afternoon so we can take our time. Christmas morning we do stocking stuff since Santa will always come no matter how old we are!

  11. So much fun! My hubby and I have a long running “discussion” over Christmas lights. I say “white lights or no lights” and he has threatened to cover the yard in bright red lights.

  12. We always had a fake tree as well. Mom said it was always too much work and clean up, especially w having a dog and the needles falling off. I don’t think I went to the mall once this season. I got great deals on line during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

  13. Girl, come and visit SOCal anytime– I have an extra bedroom (you’ll have to put up with my kids) but plan a race out here when the snow is too much! I miss the snow, but I can can see how it gets old after awhile. I do miss cool weather though! Fun List Jill! Merry Christmas!

  14. The anticipation of Santa’s arrival is still one of my most favorite memories as well! Even as an adult, I still get excited on Christmas eve 🙂

  15. Love this survey! I am going to have to answer these questions… so fun! Loved reading about how you do Christmas, Jill!

  16. I think the pink bike is a favorite! I also had one with unicorns on the side. 🙂 Never had a candy cane before, it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I discovered you can eat them. I just thought they were only used for decorations!!!

  17. My favorite Christmas music is also Trans Siberian Orchestra.. You just can’t go wrong there! I love eggnog in my coffee (just a splash) and agree with you – fake trees are just so much easier! Happy holidays Jill!

  18. We celebrate Hanukkah but lots of the same questions apply. I am not an egg nog person at all-totally don’t get it. I love giving presents so much more than receiving them. If we hung lights I wouldn’t do them until way after Thanksgiving. It’s my favorite holiday! I love spending extra time with my family on holiday breaks. We are headed up to NY right now and will be getting on a week long cruise Saturday. Looking forward to lots of fun family time. Have a merry Christmas!

  19. I love this and your answers :). I might have to steal the idea for my blog tomorrow.

  20. Cute and fun! We are in the early stages of Hanukkah and loving it 🙂 I’ve never liked egg nog or don’t like anything peppermint but I love some good hot chocolate 🙂 YUM

  21. Your puzzle photo made me realize that there are other families that actually sit down to do a holiday puzzle together. I already have several Christmas puzzles out for our company that arrives next week. Your Christmas eve dinner sounds lovely and what a nice time to relax and just sit at the table having a great conversation with the ones you love! We still have a real Christmas tree, and actually I decorate a few too many trees for our home, but it has evolved over the years and I enjoy decorating.

  22. I love all these beautiful Christmas photos! And that is such a sweet cookie tradition too 🙂 And giving gifts to the kids is awesome, assuming it’s what they wanted!
