Enjoy the Benefits of Warm Lemon Water in the Morning
I feel like I’ve been drinking lemon water forever.
When I was a kid I was rarely allowed to drink soda so my drink of choice was usually lemon water. When I was in college I started drinking lemon water to have an inexpensive alternative to plain water. Now, warm lemon water has become part of my daily morning ritual.
One of the first things I do after waking up is make coffee and while the coffee brews I drink an 8-ounce glass of warm water with the juice of 1/2 lemon. It’s routine and my body craves the healthy hydration first thing in the morning.
The Benefits of Drinking Warm Lemon Water
Stimulates the digestive system. Drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning helps loosen and flush out the toxins that fill your digestive tract.
Gives your immune system a healthy boost. Lemon juice has a high vitamin C content which is an important vitamin that helps fight off the seasonal onset of colds and flu.
Hydration. Drinking flavored water is one of the best ways to stay hydrated and prevent boredom with drinking only plain water.
Energy booster. Drinking a glass of warm lemon water first thing in the morning will give you a boost of energy, and helps start your day off on a bright note.
Rejuvenate your skin. Lemons contain antioxidants that help stop free radical damage. The vitamin C in lemons also helps your skin maintain its elasticity.
Reduces inflammation. Uric acid builds up in your body and causes inflammation. The lemon juice helps to flush the uric acid out of your body.
Aids in weight loss. Staying hydrated is beneficial to weight loss and the benefit of pectin fiber in lemons make you feel full.
Alkalizes your stomach. Lemon water helps increase the alkalinity of your body (more information at 5 Steps to Living Alkaline).
Cleansing and purifying. Lemon water flushes out toxins that build up in your body. Lemon juice is a diuretic that helps keep your urinary track free from toxins, while changing the pH levels to stop bacterial growth.
What I’ve learned over the past few months:
- Don’t grab the convenient bottled lemon juice. The live enzymes, vitamins and minerals of fresh lemon juice are what provide most of the benefits.
- Don’t skip heating the water to save time. You get some of the same benefits from room temperature or cold lemon water but the warm water helps with stimulating the digestive tract even more.
- Warm lemon water is the most beneficial in the morning. An 8-ounce glass starts the day with a boost of energy and hydration and begins flushing the toxins first thing.
