The Best Apples for Cooking Eating and Baking

Apples are one of my favorite things about fall! I’m going to try to convince the family we need to plan a trip to an orchard or maybe an apple festival. My kids will love the idea. Not! I may have to bribe them.

Every time I want to cook or bake with apples I can’t remember which variety is best for what. Fresh eating is easy to remember, Kiku and Honey Crisp are my go to favorites. With cooking and baking I end up googling or talking to the produce guy for suggestions.

  1. Loved this post! And so glad you reshared this post on Five Things Friday! I recently went apple picking and wished I would have read this beforehand. Honeycrisp are by far my favorite to eat and I like Cortland for baking, but that’s mostly because they tend to be very easy to slice haha 🙂

  2. Oh, I think my 15 year old would love to go to an apple orchard – he eats an apple every single day!!!

  3. I have always been a big fan of Gala apples…I have a hard time eating Granny Smith. It isn’t really about the tartness, but rather the texture of the skin. Weird right? Thanks for sharing and good luck getting those teenagers to go with you! 😉

  4. I LOVE Fuji and Gala apples. I probably eat an apple a day in one way or another.

  5. Oh Apples! We have them everywhere. My personal favorite are honeycrisp and Red Delicious! We have a trip to the orchard all planned out for this week. I know I’ll be using your reference guide. I always make crockpot applesauce with some of them. My house smells amazing for days!

  6. Naturally, I went apple picking yesterday, and seemed to have picked all apples that are best for sauces 😛 #fallfail BUT I like their taste, so that’s what matters right ? 🙂 HAPPY ACTIVE NATION DAY!

  7. I am allergic to most apples but thankfully I am able to still eat my favorite granny smith and pink lady apples. Rarely does a day go by that I don’t have one if not two…And I love to bake with them as well! Granny smiths are perfect for apple crisps and pies.
