What Does “Be True To You” Mean To You?

Have you ever heard or read something that just stuck with you? Words that stay in the back of your mind and pop up at the most random times? That’s what happened when I ordered this tank.

And along with the tank from Powercakes.net I received this nice surprise (the pink hair band was not included)…

When I opened the package I was so excited to get the shirt I absentmindedly slipped the bracelet onto my wrist. I haven’t taken it off since. Now, every time I look at it or a glimpse of the words catch my eye it reminds me. It makes me think.

All of this is going somewhere I promise.

Little did I know that wearing this simple little black bracelet would kind of force me to think about and answer this question, what does “be true to you” mean to me and I’m glad it did. To be honest, at first, I was surprised to realize I wasn’t sure what it meant. A little more thought and this is what I have come up with.

Be true to you means…

  • acknowledge your strengths as much as you do your weaknesses
  • trust what you know and feel
  • recognize and appreciate your strengths
  • be open to the advice of others, but ultimately make up your own mind
  • being myself makes me a better me
  • following my own value system and common sense regardless of who might disagree
  • none of this is contingent on progress, perfection or success

This post is entirely inspired by Kasey, the designer of the shirt and the mastermind behind Powercakes.net.

You know I’m going to ask,

What does “be true to you” mean to you?

Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is YOUER than you. Dr. Seuss

  8. Being true to yourself is as simple as just listening to yourself. Listening to what YOU want to do. You don’t and can’t please EVERYONE – so every so often, just take a breather and PLEASE yourself. I never force myself to do anything I don’t want to. I do not follow any packs, I do me, and I do it well. If people don’t like that, that’s their problem, NOT mine!

  13. I found this quote yesterday that I think sums up my definition – it’s knowing and acting on “wrong is wrong, even if everyone is doing it. right is right, even if no one is doing it”. That’s what it means to me! 🙂

  14. Great post – cute tank!!
I think that being true to me means not worrying about what others think and just being who I am all the time – I don’t want to fit into a mold or be just like everyone else.

    1. Not worrying about what others think. That’s a tough one but I find that as I get older it is becoming a lot easier. Wonders of maturing 🙂

  15. Isn’t it great how such a simple quote can be so powerful? It’s a great reminder to me to stop comparing or worrying about what I +should+ be doing and just do what I love.

  16. What a great post. Being true to me is accepting my faults and celebrating my strengths and working at both to be the best version of myself.

    1. Well said Sara. Accepting the strengths and the faults. We all have faults and yet I sometimes feel like I’m the only one. No more! A work in progress 🙂

  17. For me at this season of my life, it means allowing myself to feel all the emotions that come with life–good and bad–instead of trying to conceal, suppress or fake my way through them. Not that I’m a raging lunatic or a loose cannon or anything. But I’ve spent most of my life feeling like I need to “tone it down” in the emotion department.

    I’m so OVER that.

I’m allowing myself to fully FEEL life.

  18. To be true to yourself means to be comfortable in your own skin and not change just because someone else wants you to. I have found that as I age this becomes much easier:)

  19. You are too adorable! Love this pic of you. “True to Me” means to be honest about who you are and what you want, and not to gauge my life based on someone else’s. Great post!

    1. Thanks Maria. The comparison trap. Ugh! It can suck the joy right out of me in a second, if I let it. I’m letting it less and less often 🙂

  20. It means being true to myself always. Listening, doing, being.

  21. Adorable tank. I easily get caught up with what others are doing and the phrase, “be true to you” is a great reminder that all of that stuff doesn’t matter. The only thing I can control in this life is myself.

    1. Hi Annie. This reminds me of the quote about “it’s a full time job being yourself.” We shouldn’t have time to be so caught up in what others are doing 🙂

  22. Love this! I think it’s very important that we are true to ourselves by not comparing ourselves to others and thinking we should be something other than who we are. We are each different and unique on purpose, so we need to stop trying to conform.

    1. Ugh! The comparison trap! It sucks the joy right out of me if I let it. I’m letting it less and less often 🙂

      Thanks Kim!

  23. Being true to me means just that. I need to remain grounded in my passion, my successes and my setbacks. Learn from my mistakes and not waiver from who I am in essence because that is what people like/fell in love with and that is simply who I am. Be honest with myself and stay consistent.

    Great post and cute shirt!

    1. Thanks Diatta. It’s easy until we get to accepting setbacks and mistakes. A work in progress 🙂

  24. I LOVE this! Great post Jill!! Being true to me means not getting caught up in what I “should” be doing and live the life I have been blessed with!!

    1. Thanks Nancy! What we should be doing pales in comparison to what we’re are doing.

  25. In addition to your points, I think it means listen to and trust your gut. If you don’t feel good about something, it’s probably not something true to you.

    1. You’re right! I need to listen to my gut and trust that I’m right. I can listen. It’s the trust part that’s tough. Work in progress!

  26. Great post and cute tank. I often forget to trust what I know and feel, I find myself second guessing so much! Who knew, all of that just by ordering a fun little shirt!

    1. I know. Just a shirt 🙂

You and me both second guessing ourselves. I have decided to stop! Not perfect but I’m getting there.

  27. Love this! Being true to you means that I not only embrace who I am but I celebrate who I am!

  28. Great post Jill! This is such a powerful statement. Sometimes we get lost in the values and perspective of others around us that we lose who WE are. Sometimes we need to remember to focus on ourselves to remember to be “true to you”.

    1. Thank you Mary. I was there and lost sight of who I am and what I know. Not anymore 🙂

  29. I love this! What an empowering message and great reminder to all of us to embrace who WE truly are! Being true to me means exactly what it says…listening to my heart, body and mind to make the best decisions for myself. It’s hard not to get caught up in what everyone else is doing but when you’re true to yourself then you will find true happiness 🙂

    Karen @karenlovestorun

    1. I couldn’t agree more Karen! What everyone else is doing is great but what we’re doing is just as great. =HAPPINESS

    1. Yes, there is going to be the “bad” for all of us and that is ok 🙂 That life lesson took me a little time thanks to a little thing called perfectionism.

  30. Love this Jill! Yes, I know what you mean about a little phrase! I think for me, it is “life begins when you step outside your comfort zone”. I always try to keep that in mind now, but I love be true to you!

I think this is especially important in this world of social media where we can hide behind a computer screen, we need to focus on who we are, and expressing ourselves in the right way. I admit sometimes I feel as though I should follow everyone else with some of the posts, but I realize its not me! I have resisted so far 🙂 Now your post can give me more strength!

    1. Thank you Tina. You’re so right. With social media we can present whoever we think we should be whether it’s the real you or not. Keep resisting and just be you 🙂

  31. Cute stuff and clearly empowering! I’d say that being true to me is embracing the fact that I am pragmatic and not super meditative or introspective. Honestly, I think it means I don’t do a lot of thinking about just this kind of thing, although I certainly respect those who do and wonder if I shouldn’t be more like that!

    1. Hi Amanda, introspective doesn’t come naturally to me but it’s something I benefit from. It takes something to inspire (or a trigger) me to think about this kind of thing and after I’m always glad I did. I accept and work with the pragmatic side of me.

  32. LOVE THIS! be true to you means exactly what it sounds like… being true to you in all aspects of your life…. not forcing anything, not trying to be anyone you like. for me, itz all about balance. yes, i live a healthy life. yes, i eat mostly healthy foods. yes, i LOVE ICE CREAM!
