GOAL + REWARD = ACCOMPLISHMENT
It’s that time of year when conversations and blog posts are all abuzz about goals. Reviews, recaps and chatting about goals for the new year.
You’re probably already familiar with S.M.A.R.T. goals right?
I like to set goals. Actually I LOVE to set goals. That feeling of accomplishment as you check things off your list. But, when you think about your goals do you include tangible rewards? The feeling of accomplishment is rewarding in itself. Setting a new PR, 5 unassisted pull-ups, and crossing the finish line of my first ultra all come with a feeling of awesomeness and invincibility. That feeling of satisfaction and confidence. You know what I’m talking about, right?
Like there isn’t anything you can’t do!
That feeling has always been enough to motivate me to commit and do the work even when I didn’t feel like it. When I committed to Michelle Bridges 12 Week Body Transformation I added something I’ve never done before, a tangible reward for completing 4 weeks of the program. It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Athleta so choosing my reward was easy. I wanted a new running top for the winter.
My latest vision board is in my workout room and includes an image of what I was working for. I skipped one workout [by choice] because my body was simply tired and needed to rest. Other than that whenever I considered running fewer miles or skipping a workout the visual reminder was all it took to keep me on track.
When my daughter and I went shopping on Black Friday. Her first stop was Abercrombie. Mine? Athleta. I was surprised by how excited I was to buy the top [or as it turned out 2 tops]! It was fun and it was that feeling of accomplishment all over again.
The verdict? Would I have accomplished the goal without dangling the carrot? Undoubtedly yes, but obtaining the reward was a CELEBRATION of my work, effort and determination! Linking a concrete reward to a desired behavior motivates when the outcome itself isn’t enough and it motivates well beyond the immediate goal. Will I include a tangible reward again? Yes! Not for every goal but it will be fun to CELEBRATE every now and then.
Remember when Angela and I hosted a link up for A Day in the Life? We’re doing it again! Join us on Friday, December 20th with your Holiday A Day in the Life. Share your photos and stories from a day during the holiday season!
Do you include rewards when you set goals? What is [or would be] your tangible reward for accomplishing your goal? Are you a goal setter?
Be HEALTHY. Be HAPPY. Be YOU.
