Super Nutrients
Disclosure: The following post is sponsored by Fitfluential LLC on behalf of Nutrex Hawaii. I am being compensated for this honest review but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I first read about Spirulina last year when I started reading books by Scott Jurek and Rich Roll. Both athletes often included the super nutrient to recipes. So, of course, I was immediately curious as to what Spirulina is and why amazing athletes choose to add it to their diet.
What is Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica?
- blue-green vegetable microalgae
- all natural, 100% vegetarian, Kosher Certified, and Non-GMO
- free of gluten, lactose, soy, pesticides, herbicides, and solvents
- wonderful source of protein, carotenoids, vitamins, iron, and anti-oxidants
- supports increased energy levels and boosts immunity
What are the benefits of adding Spirulina to my diet?
Spirulina is…
- considered to be one of the world’s most powerful superfoods
- ridiculously high in protein – its 60-65% protein (compared to say fish, which is up to 35% protein)
- very high in chlorophyll – which builds healthy blood, promotes better circulation, and helps reduce inflammation – so basically it helps everything…I think of chlorophyll as liquid energy
- boosts energy
- heals your body
- helps you deal with cravings – less cravings for junk food
- boosts immunity
- detoxes your body
- helps promote weight loss
I also received another Nutrex Hawaii product, Hawaiian Astaxanthin. If you’re like me this is a super nutrient you’ve never heard of.
What is BioAstin Hawaiian Astaxanthin?
- green microalgae
- Non-GMO and BSE-Free
- free of gluten, lactose, pesticides, and herbicides
- a super-antioxidant
- the world’s strongest antioxidant
What are the benefits of adding Astaxanthin to my diet?
- a natural anti-inflammatory
- powerful UV-blocking properties
- reduce wrinkles and improves skin moisture levels
- increased strength
- increased recovery from exercise
- supports immune function
- supports cardiovascular health
- protects cells and the nervous system from oxidative damage
- supports brain health
That’s an impressive list benefits. Curious to know why these products are called the athlete’s secret weapon? Want to know how they work or is it safe? Check out the science behind the products at Nutrex Hawaii – Science. That’s the nutrition and research geek in me.
My experience?
- I haven’t been using Spirulina or Astaxanthin long enough to realize the benefits
- the flavor of the Spirulina powder can be a little overwhelming in a recipe so I’ve been adding 1/2 of a dose twice a day to smoothies, soups and salads
- I’m curious to see if after using daily whether or not I notice some of the benefits
Speaking of nutrition geek. I was happy to have also received books on Spirulina and Astaxanthin. No, I didn’t read all three cover to cover but I found the information I was looking for.

I have heard nothing but great things about it. I have only tried it once in a smoothie at an organic smoothie shop, so I am interested in your experience once you have been taking it for a while.
I’ve not tried spirulina regularly either but have always been intrigued to think about trying it. I’ve had it just in juices before where the flavour is disguised.
Hi Jan. It works well in smoothies, soups and salad dressings too.
I’d kind of heard about Spirulina but dismissed it. It’s hard to keep up on everything but this really does sound great now that you made it an easy read for me. 🙂 Perhaps I should give it a try.
It’s impossible to keep up with it all! There is so much out there that promise great things.
I’ve never tried it, but it’s something I might look into.
Hi Amy. I’m taking it consistently now. The verdict is still out!
I use a different brand too, and love it. I take it when I don’t want to eat but want the benefits of the sustenance it provides.
That’s a great way to use it Elle. Not necessarily everyday if what you’re eating gives you the nutrients you need.
I’ve used spirulina – not that brand though – and don’t mind the flavor at all. I do believe it must be beneficial like a lot of different supplements but it seems they are always just on a level that isn’t immediately noticeable. Or I’m just not that in tune with my body. Haha.
I’m wondering how long it should take before I start noticing a difference. Or will I notice a difference? Hmmmm…..
I’ve tried EnergyBits but was curious about spirulina in general – I saw it in a grocery store recently.
Years back I used to take this and I almost forgot about it until now. I can’t remember why I even stopped, I must have just ran out and never bought more, who knows… But I learned quite a bit more from your post, I probably took it for one of the reasons, but I had no idea all the benefits, thanks for the review!!!
I’ve never tried spirulina before, but I know think I must!
I was just sent some through Energy Bits, like you I haven’t had enough time to truly see if it works, but the reviews so far are all about it! I think it will really help with my training, and I hope to use it during my races and marathons in future. I have to be 100% sure before I fully incorporate it as every race counts for me at this point in my running career.
Interesting tor read more about it, and hear your perspective! Thanks, Jill!
I’m trying it consistently now. Time will tell before I’m 100% convinced.
Spirulina and blue green algae are pretty amazing, but I haven’t found it worth the price tag- if you’re eating well and getting plenty of greens, I don’t think anyone needs to include them…. but for extra anti-inflammation and disease protection, they can be powerful!
I agree. The price tag was a bit shocking.
I’ve never had spirulina and I haven’t heard much about it either. If the taste is a little overwhelming, I might not ever take enough to make a difference, though! Thanks for the info!
Tina, it’s not bad in smoothies, soups and salad dressings.
Oh good, maybe I could give it a try then!
I’ve heard lots about Spirulina but haven’t tried it myself.
I’m skeptical and frugal, but the information is intruiging!
I was too Coco. I’m trying it now. We’ll see.
I’ve never tried it, but like Angela only hear good things.
Me too. That’s what convinced me to try it. The fact that ultrarunner extraordinaire, Scott Jurek recommends it helped 🙂
I’ve heard nothing but good things about Spirulina. I have tastes of it but have never taken it on a regular basis. I think I should start!
I’m taking it regularly now. I wonder how long until I should start noticing benefits?
