A Birthday Run
Training has been going great…up until Sunday. My 23 mile birthday run on Sunday was shortened to 18 miles due to sharp pain in my front calf/shin of my left leg. The pain was so sharp I was sure it was a fracture or worse. The kind of pain that makes your knees buckle when trying to stand. I wondered, “do shin splints hurt this bad?” No, I wasn’t thinking about what was wrong or how severely I may have injured my body. All I could think about was no 50 mile goal race this year. All of my training and I wouldn’t get to run the ultra in November. That was depressing.
I’m happy to report that this morning the pain is lessening and not as sharp!! Where do I go from here? I would like to figure out what caused the pain. Overuse? Form? Muscle imbalance? Unfortunately, I may never know. And of course, no running until ALL of the pain and tightness are gone. I’m optimistically thinking no running the rest of this week and I’ll be fine.
So, other than that, how did my training look last week?
Monday – Rest
Tuesday – 6 miles
Wednesday – Yoga
Thursday – 6 miles
Friday – Yoga
Saturday – 10 miles
Sunday – 18 miles
The MAF Training continues. It’s hard to run at such a slow pace not to mention the fact that a long run takes forever. I just keep believing that in the end it will pay off and that keeps me going. I have noticed an improvement in consistency with being able to stay within the training zone with a +5 BPM buffer.
Perfect for long summer runs!
I’m ready for whatever Week 7 brings!
Chad and I have been talking about races for the rest of the year. Fall race calendar:
9/14 Glenwood Garden Night Trail Run 5k
10/1 Mudathlon 5k
10/5 Mox 12 Hour Endurance Race (A test run for the 50 mile event. How far can I run in 12 hours?))
10/18 Runners World Festival Hat Trick 5k, 10k and Half
11/2 Nashiville Ultramarathon 50 miles
11/10 Pensacola Marathon
11/28 Thanksgiving Day Race 5k
Have you ever had shin splints? Do you have races planned for the fall? How far do you think you could run in 12 hours?
