2 Weeks From Tomorrow Is Race Day
My participation in Under Armour’s What’s Beautiful competition as a Fitfluential Ambassador has become more than a campaign. It has become the inspiration and motivation to push harder, run further and believe I WILL!
In 2 weeks I will run my What’s Beautiful goal race. Just thinking about it gives me butterflies. Last year I ran the same race and it was that day I ran further than I ever had before. Crossing the finish line was empowering and made me feel like I can do anything. During the next 2 weeks I will continue to train physically, but my biggest challenge will be the mental training.
14 days. 336 hours. 20,160 minutes.
For the next 14 days I WILL…
- follow my training plan
- listen to my body
- trust my training
- fight the self-doubt that creeps into my mind
I WILL do this! I WILL challenge my comfort zone. I WILL push past self doubt. I WILL run further than I ever have before!
My big goal for 2013 is a 50 mile race in the fall. So this is just another training run right?

Hi. I’m Alexandra and I’m over 50. I say it like that because I do believe society marginalizes women over 50 when it comes to defining beauty, and I want to join those voices who stand up to say it’s okay to be in the second half of life. The alternative isn’t that great, is it? I joined the Under Armour What’s Beautiful campaign for two reasons: 1. To add my midlife voice to creating a new and improved definition of beauty; and 2. To encourage all women, especially Boom-Chicka-Boomers, to join me.
Beauty isn’t necessarily young, skinny and white. Anywhere you see a healthy woman of any age, size and color, that’s where you’ll see beauty. When I’m healthy, I radiate confidence and energy, and am creating a frame of reference for all my university students. I want them to see how they can be in another 30 years – vibrant and strong. I’m showing my boys that an active, healthy life is the ONLY life they should be seeking as they grow up. And I’m also trying to keep up with my health club fitness students who are in their 70s and 80s. When I grow up, I want to be like them. They show up to class every week, smiling, standing with good posture and injury-free. They don’t worry about what the mirror says nearly as much as they worry about maintaining good health.
In my post “What’s Beautiful? Health at Any Age,” http://funandfit.org/whats-beautiful-health-at-any-age/, I mention the negative images we women so often have of ourselves regarding our looks, especially as we age. I worked hard and earned my smile wrinkles, grey hairs and pregnancy stretch marks. I would never have chosen to frown, just to avoid facial lines, nor would I trade in my handsome boys for a perfectly smooth belly. I blame their teen years for my grey hair, of course!
I’ve included a video that shares my goal. Watch it, as you’ll be amazed and astounded. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLEzjE7pHDI
