A Phrase That Keeps You Going
As we all know, running can be as much a mental challenge as it is a physical test of strength and fitness. There are times when the body is willing to run longer, but it’s difficult mentally to keep going. Last weekend I ran my longest back 2 back training runs with 8 miles on Saturday and 18 on Sunday. At about mile 10 on Sunday the mental challenge became just as difficult as the physical challenge. Negativity was determined to creep into my thoughts.
How do you push forward? How do you quiet the negative thoughts?
According to Merriam-Webster, a mantra is…
a mystical formula of invocation or incantation. Repetition of a mantra can induce a trancelike state and can lead the participant to a higher level of spiritual awareness.
The mantra that I find myself using most often speaks specifically to me, resonates with meaning and was inspired by a conversation with my husband. There are times when just the thought of running an ultra is overwhelming. As I write this I’m realizing that a mantra isn’t only for the times when I’m actually running. It helps when I have the occasional self doubt or when I’m questioning my goal. It’s personal, simple and is the mental push I need when the mental aspect of running becomes as difficult, or more so, than the physical.
I say it as often as I need to and, more so than not, I say it out loud….
Do you have a running mantra? Do you use it for times other than when you’re running? What phrase keeps you going?
