Caesar Creek State Park (Dirt Days Trail Series)
Distance: 6.3 miles
Another trail race completed and thoroughly enjoyed!
With each race of this series I finish thinking that was the hardest course so far. After this race it occurred to me that every course in this series is difficult. In fact, trail running in general is rarely described as easy. Every race of this series has something that makes it different from the others and “the hardest course so far.”
With Run for the Green it was the 3+ miles of mud. For this race the difficulty was the constant rolling hills. That meant walking was a must and from what I’ve read about trail running in general, highly recommended.
Not only was this race hilly it was one of the most scenic throughout the course. Almost to the point of distraction.
Run date. How quickly I forgot how difficult it was! Only thoughts of how much I love and enjoy running, especially with Chad. I’m using the term “with” loosely. I should probably say how much I love seeing him at the start and at the finish. He is a natural on trails and with yet another PR I didn’t actually run with him. WTG Chad!
I think about every race as a training race.
Everything I’m doing now is preparing me to run 50 miles in the fall. With the hills in this race I was quickly reminded that it’s crazy to think I’m going to run an ultra and not incorporate walk breaks. I was also reminded that I have to mentally practice. I have to stop thinking that to walk makes me less of a runner because, as irrational as it is, I do. Just like I added practicing what and when to eat into training I’m adding walking practice. Before my first 50k in May (or maybe it’s June) and definitely before the 50 miler in the fall I want to be able know the answer to these questions:
- What is the best ratio of running to walking?
- At what pace do you need to run and walk in order to finish within a goal time?
Now my running questions for you.
1. Do you intentionally incorporate walking into your running?
2. Do you have a set run to walk ratio or do you walk based on how you feel?
3. Unrelated to walking. Do you ever feel like your constantly hungry? I mean All. The. Time!
