I’m a long time label reader but, until a few months ago, not as thoroughly as I thought. Imagine my surprise when I found High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) in the brand of ketchup I buy. I had to know. If HFCS is in my ketchup, what other products would surprise me?
I’m sure everyone knows about the dangers of HFCS. It’s been linked to a variety of serious health issues like obesity, high blood pressure, learning ability, and memory. You probably wouldn’t be surprised to know it all comes down to the money. Big money! From the profits of the corn industry to the fact that HFCS is cheaper to make than regular sugar from beets and sugar canes. I won’t even begin to touch on the politics, carbon footprints and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)! My whole point is that HFCS is in a lot of products that you may be eating everyday:
- frozen pizzas
- cereal bars
- cocktail peanuts
- boxed macaroni and cheese
- salad dressing
- canned fruit
- steak sauce
- cottage cheese
- “healthy” breakfast cereals
- canned soup
Your best defense? Stay informed and read the labels. Know what’s in the food you’re eating.
One more thing. As you’re reading the labels keep in mind that the food industry realizes that people are becoming more aware of what’s in their food. So, in a clever attempt to deceive they have replaced HFCS with names like Inulin, Glucose-Fructose Syrup, Iso Glucose, Chicory, Fruit Fructose and most recently Corn Sugar. It sounds natural doesn’t it.
Now, before this starts to sound like an on-my-soap-box post, on the menu for this week:
Are you surprised by the foods that have HFCS? Are you a label reader? What are you most looking forward to this week?
