- In case you were wondering. It's still dark at 5:20 a.m.
- I'm up anyway so why not.
- It's not likely I'm going to be able to convince many people to meet with me. Thankfully I have Chad and Jennifer.
- Reviewing the route or anything for that matter requires the trunk light.
- Glad Chad remebered the reflective vest.
- The first half of the 13+ miles was a delight.
- The sunrise was beautiful. Totally worth getting up for.
- The birds signaling the start of a new day made me smile.
- The second half of the 13+ was hot and humid.
- By 8:30 you've run, showered and dressed. Most people are just waking up.
- Running time does not compete with kids/family time.
- According to the training plan this was supposed to be 12 miles. Chad and Jennifer stopped and waited for me to add the 1+ mile for Hotter Than Hades. Continuing was tough!
Conclusion: The benefits of running before sunrise out weigh the negatives.
Hotter Than Hades Virtual Half #3
What is the earliest you've ever started a run? How did it go? When is your favorite running/workout time?
I never thought of running at night that way. So simple and yet such a good idea 🙂

I think the earliest I’ve run is typically around 6 am. I typically like running in the morning because then it’s done and I can move on with the rest of my day. However, it’s been so hot here lately that I’ve been running at night. It’s nice to know it’s going to get cooler as I go not hotter!
Trying to type on iPad. Sorry bout typos
You are awesome! I love everything about this post!, chels and I are trying to run every other day at the beach early in the morning, it’s beautiful watching the sunrise, the beach breeze is awesome and coming back to the condo with everyone still asleep you feel really accomplished!
OMG! you are an early bird. That’s amazing that you wake up so early to exercise in the outdoors. You sure are an inspiration! Following your blog to get some healthy tips. You may like to follow mine.
I’m up every morning at 4:00. If I had it my way I would run every run at 5:00! I don’t get the mid-day runners either. And my morning runs are always better than evening runs.
Thank you Linda. You and I call it dedication. Others call it an obsession LOL
Thanks Nikki!

Eek, that is early! I usually get out by 6:10 on weekdays, and the same time on weekends if it’s going to be hot. I would like to run earlier just because it’s a bit darker and cooler, but I’m just beginning to adjust to 6 AM runs.
Hey, you do what you gotta do to run in the cooler temps, right!?! I usually start my runs at 5:30 as well. It is so awesome and peaceful to be out there waking up with the world. LOVE it!! So glad you had a great run and completed another half! WaHOO!
I’m truly in awe of your dedicaton! I’m not a runner but I do cycle…just not that early! I miss those days when I did do long distance, now more for pleasure.
I get up naturally around 5, so usually head out the door right after that!
love running in morning
I see people running here mid-day and I don’t get it!
tooooo blasted hot & humid to run in S. Fl then!
5 a.m. is ideal 🙂
Thanks Carly!

Wow! You rock! I’m so proud of you! Now I’ve got to get myself to follow suit… 😉
Thank you Lisa! I no longer have a gym membership but when I did I avoided the dreadmill as much as possible. But, I can see your rationale for liking it 😉
Thank you Julia 🙂
Nice job Sarah!
Thanks Marisa! How is HTH going for you?
Hi Laura. It was fun running before sunrise. I would do 4:30 but I would most likely be running by myself 🙂
Thanks Jennifer! I was shocked when my husband agreed to go.
That’s awesome you can wake up and run that early in the morning! I like to run on the treadmill…..I know it’s very boring but I can stop anytime and not have to walk/run back! HA! You are an inspiration, keep up the great work!
The earliest I have started runs is about 5:30am as well…not counting the crazy ragnar relay night legs! haha! I kinda like running in the dark though…I seem to run better not knowing where I am going or what is coming. Its pretty awesome to say you had an amazing run all before the rest of the world wakes up too 😉 Awesome miles and way to get them in early!
I started at 5:30am on Saturday as well. I also completed the Hotter than Hades run that day within my 15mile run~ If I have time to nap later that day I will get up early before it gets hot!
wow. you are amazing! HTH times three!!
I have had to go out as early as 4:30am because of the heat we have had. These are my shorter (i.e. 1 hr runs) so it is a 4:15 wake up, get dressed, eat a gel and out the door…kind of fun to be honest.
wow, look at you! Way to go! I like to go early, but early for me is more like 6AM 🙂
