Happiness is about cultivating a life full of beautiful moments and cherishing those sweet, soulful memories that make you smile. When you do things that fill your heart with light it will manifest feelings of joy and, even if only for the moment, will make you feel complete.
Lately my thoughts and emotions have been all over the place. Maybe it’s the fact that after an amazing summer break I’m going back to work next week. Maybe it’s the completion of yoga teacher training and the personal [and unexpected] transformation that occurred. Maybe it’s my re-evaluation of priorities and realizing how much they’ve changed. Maybe it’s finally feeling like I have finally found a healthy relationship with food. See what I mean? My thoughts are all over the place.
Despite the mental chaos, I have found happiness and contentment.
I’m able to accept being a little unsettled and without absolute direction as a door opening for change and new beginnings. That is a perspective I would not have been able to see things a year ago.
Here are a few simple ways to discover the happiness within yourself.
Be present. Awareness opens our minds and hearts and is a platform from which we can appreciate the world around us. By creating awareness in our daily lives we increase the ability to notice the happiness that occurs all around us.
Turn meaning into actions. Take your values and turn them into verbs. If family is what really matters to you, make it a point to spend technology free time together. If community is a priority to you, volunteer with a local organization.
Find purpose. Get involved in something outside of ourselves and create a life with meaning. Align your actions with the things you care about beyond yourself.
Make your body happy. Your nervous system connects the brain with the entire body. With no separation, a healthier body means a healthier brain. Listen to your body and notice how it needs to be treated, nourished and moved.
Keep track of your joys. Sometimes we need to be reminded to stop and take a moment to think about the things in life that fill you with joy. The more you focus on what brings you joy, the more joy you’ll find in day to day life. Try writing a daily happiness list. Write down the things that bring you joy no matter how big or small.
Forgive and let go. Often easier said than done. When we hold onto our mistakes or the mistakes of others, it has a negative impact on our mind, body and relationships. Release the negative burdens by forgiving yourself and/or others. Let go of the things that do not serve you.
Lets chat. What ways of finding happiness and contentment would you add to the list? How do you handle feeling unsettled and without definite direction?
