One morning last week I was driving to work listening to my favorite morning show . I started scanning during commercials and heard a very brief part of….
“sweetener added to food that is used in antifreeze”
I know the reality but I couldn’t help but think, no way this could be true!
I wanted the facts so I did a little research and this is what I found:
According to the Daily Beast, Bottles of Fireball whiskey, the insanely popular cinnamon-flavored frathouse favorite, are being recalled in some European countries—because it’s got too much of a chemical used in antifreeze (among other things) inside. Antifreeze. Does anyone else find this alarming?
Wait, there’s more, and it gets worse, The Fireballers prepare two versions: a recipe for Canada and the United States containing the chemical, propylene glycol, and a European version that has less of the stuff. Why is more ok in the U.S.?
Check out what the Center for Disease Control lists as the affected organ systems:
- Dermal (Skin)
- Renal (Urinary System or Kidneys)
- Respiratory (From the Nose to the Lungs)
I wonder how these organs are affected?
The Federal Food and Drug Administration has classified the additive as “generally recognized as safe” for use in food. Is generally recognized as safe good enough?
Maybe we need higher standards?
Like I said, I know the reality is that this kind of thing happens all the time but every and then I’m still shocked to know it’s true.
Call me crazy but I’m a little skeptical when the foods we eat are created/modified in a lab and so far far removed from real food.

Chemical Additives Banned In Other Countries But Allowed in the US [I have no words]
Did you know apples are at the top of the list for the most pesticide residue?
Go to the EWG’s 2014 Shoppers Guide to check out where your favorite fruits and veggies fall on the list.
Let’s say for arguments sake that you can’t believe everything you read on the internet. Well, if even a fraction of what I read is true we should all be alarmed.
Off my soapbox now and on to menu planning.
I’m traveling this week to visit family and run a race so my menu this week is short and has a recipe or 2 that weren’t made last week.
On the Menu
Roasted Poblano Rellenos (Skinnytaste Cookbook) —–> from last week’s menu
Fiesta Fish Tacos —–> family request
Fall Harvest Salad
Broccoli and Asparagus with Scallops Stir Fry —–> New recipe!
Larabar (bars and Renola)
Yogurt with Chia Flax and Hemp
Yikes! That ended up being way longer than I planned.
