Well hello folks. I’m happy to be guest posting here for Jill. Jill and I just connected only this year, and we’ve made such a great friendship since then. So blessed to know her.
A little about me, I blog over at Cotter Crunch. There I share my gluten-free recipes, my life as a Sherpa wife to a professional triathlete, a little bit of nutrition talk, and a little bit of fitness talk. I’m pretty much a hodgepodge deal. Oh and I make gluten-free snack bites called healthy bites for locals and share a lot of recipes in the e-book on my site. Okay so that seems like a lot, but so far been able to handle it. Ha ha
Speaking of being able to handle things, today I’m following up on Jill’s recent gut health post, Supplements for Health and Performance. Actually, consider this the bonus round. These foods/supplements have helped me maintain my own gut health, and I’ve come a long long way. You can read about my journey to gluten-free here. But just know, these are just suggestions based on what has worked for me. Everyone has their own way of healing and maintaining, and I think it takes a lot of time and patience to figure it out.
One thing is for sure, stay positive and try not to Google the heck out of every symptom you think you have. Ha ha
So, why do we need to treat our gut differently? Why does it need so much TLC? Well, I think Hippocrates said it right when he wrote,
“All Diseases Begin (and End) in the Gut.”
Oh, now that’s a BOLD statement. But it’s true. If the gut is not working right, then other parts of the mind and body can begin to break down, and vice versa!
And unfortunately, we live in a world that is not perfect, so making “healthy” choices can be darn right confusing.
Let’s just keep it simple, shall we?
Stress less, move and walk, lift things, focus on eating real food, sleep, and ENJOY the little things.
Easy, right? It should be. But sometimes our “humanness” can get in the way. Sometimes we over train, sometimes we don’t MOVE each day at all. And sometimes we freak out, stress about everything, and literally deplete ourselves and our adrenals.
This is why we need to NURTURE that gut. True healing begins when we realize we need to do less and nourish more, yes?
Here are a few BONUS foods/supplements that have helped me “nourish” my gut and body:
- Colostrum (A different form of Probiotics)-
- Boosts strength, stamina and lean muscle mass production
- Promotes healthy intestinal flora and supports the entire GI tract
- Encourages cellular re-growth for healthy skin, bones, muscles, nerves and cartilage
- Fermented B Vitamin Complex (I use Max B-ND)- For liver support, adrenals, mood, and energy. If you have ever had adrenal fatigue or used birth control, b-vitamins are a must.
- Gelatin (organic and grass fed) or Bone Broth –contains collagen and amino acids proline and glycine that can help heal damaged cell walls in your gut lining. Also improves digestion. Source
- Quercetin—“Quercetin has also been shown to enhance gut barrier function by having a “sealing” effect due to its role in the assembly and expression of tight junction proteins.” This information is a word by word quote straight from the source itself. Chris Kresser and Kelsey Marksteiner (Great resources that I highly trust!). Quercetin is found in a lot of FODMAP fruits and vegetables such as onion and apples. If you are on low FODMAP diet, these foods can cause problems. But taking a quercetin supplement might be a better option.
- Salt (sea or Celtic) – source. Natural salt (not table salt) can help break down food. Did you know it actually activates the enzyme amylase? It also helps in the production of Hydrochloric Acid, which we all need more of in order to properly digest our food. I also find that drinking a little sea salt in the morning really helps with my adrenals when I am stressed.
And last but not least, the most important NATURAL SUPPLEMENT of ALL!
