Have you ever been short on time and thrown together a quick meal and, sure, it was healthy but it was also very unsatisfying and left you craving “something”? Some of my short on time menu plans turned out exactly that way. Boring and unsatisfying just for the sake of keeping it simple. One of my favorite tried and true kitchen tips is making homemade spice blends.
Flavorful and satisfying meals don’t have to be time consuming or costly. Simply toss your favorite vegetables with a little oil and a spice blend or use the blend as a rub on baked salmon. It’s an inexpensive way to add a burst of flavor to vegetables, rice, beans and quinoa. The blends also work great as a rub for grilling fish, meat and poultry.
With the spice blends I like the fact that:
- healthy doesn’t have to be boring and flavorless
- there are no additives, artificial ingredients or preservatives
- it saves me money
- I can control how much I make so the spices are always fresh
- it’s quick and easy
- I can customize the blends
- meals that are flavorful and satisfying tend to lead to fewer between meal cravings
♦ Southwest Seasoning Blend ♦
2 1/2 tbsp chili powder
2 tbsp paprika
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tbsp corriander
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp sea salt
1/4 tsp oregano
Combine all ingredients in a jar and shake. For most dishes I start with adding a 1/2 teaspoon and then, maybe, add a little more depending on what I’m cooking and who will be eating it. My daughter and I like spicy. On the other hand, my son and husband like a little less kick. I aim to please!
Works great on any dish that you want to add a southwest flavor and spice. Try it on eggs, fish, vegetables, rice and quinoa.
♦ Almost Anything Spice Blend ♦
2 tbsp paprika
2 tsp sea salt
1 tbsp dry mustard powder
1 tbsp onion powder
1 tbsp garlic powder
Combine all ingredients in a jar and shake. For most dishes I start with adding a 1/2 teaspoon. Add more to taste.
This works great on almost everything. I can’t think of a time when I added this blend and didn’t like it.
