Welcome to Fitness Friday #51
Celebrate fitness. Celebrate good health. Celebrate friends. Celebrate your passion.
Before I get to the recap I have a favor to ask of all Fitness Friday visitors and participants! I’m in the process of trying a few things to spread the word about Fitness Friday. The more the merrier right? Would you mind sharing the Fitness Friday link-up on at least one other social media? Tweet it, pin it or post it on Facebook. Any and everywhere! Thank you.
Half Marathon #6
June 23, 2012
Dayton, OH
The best way to describe this race is my experience with the sin of knowing better. Dean Karnazes explains it perfectly in his book, 50/50.
Every runner is familiar with the sin of knowing better– of stubbornly pushing ahead despite warnings from more sensible parts of our minds. The desire to keep running until the task is completed or the goal achieved is so great that it overrides our better knowledge and our self-protective faculties.
In my case I wanted the task complete and I wanted to accomplish my goal pace. My sins of knowing better were 1. underestimating the heat and 2. waiting until I was thirsty to start using the water stops. As a result of both of these I ran the first half wonderfully and stayed right on track with the goal pace I had in mind. After the halfway point I started feeling like my body wasn’t cooling. Uh oh. I’m going to be sick. For the first time in all the years I’ve been running I had to stop because I was sure I was going to be sick. The nausea got better and I was able to get back into the race, but I was unable to get back to the pace of the first 7 or so miles. From that point on I focused on finishing and rethinking every step from the starting line. My mistakes and what I have learned from them. It took me 2 days to recover and feel back to normal again.
Imagine my surprise when I found out later in the day that I won 3rd place in my division! I was sure there must have been a mistake. When I emailed the race conact they confirmed that yes, in fact, I had won third place and they would mail my medal.
I’m at the half way point of running 12 half marathons in 2012. Cool!
Right after this shot was the second time I stopped because I was pretty sure I was going to be sick. The race volunteer looked worried.
Stats
Excuse the cutoff stats image. As we were driving home I realized I the timer was still going. Guess I was too busy trying not to get sick to stop my watch. For some crazy reason that just made me laugh
Final Finish Time
2:16:13
And you know what? The good, the bad and the ugly…I seriously love running
Have you ever committed a “sin of knowing better”? Have you ever gotten sick while running?

I’ve been looking forward to reading about your latest race. Sorry it didn’t go well, but you still placed in the top three. All of my running has been on the treadmill, and I’ve only felt nauseous once. (Knock wood and thank you Jesus.) It happened because I hadn’t eaten properly that day. A mistake I have been careful not to repeat.
By the way, thanks for adding me as a friend on Daily Mile. I added the widget to my blog too. Take care!

Thanks Marsha. I won’t be making that mistake again! I’m hoping for a treadmill for Christmas

So sorry you got sick. That sounds brutal! I’ve never been sick while running (knock on wood) but I think I’d be like you – I love running no matter what!
I’ll be sharing Fitness Friday with everyone!

Thanks Angela. That experience and I can still sincerely say I love running. Runners just might in fact be crazy

Ugh, Jill- that sounds awful! Last weekend was my first similar experience. Thankfully I didn’t feel too bad during the run, but I had an awful headache afterward and was seeing stars at times. It was bizarre. We definitely shouldn’t underestimate the power for the heat! But congrats on placing!!

Oh, and I forgot to say, I’ll definitely look for ways to spread the word. I just realized I don’t have a ‘check out ff’ line on my post today, so I’ll go back and add it in.

Thanks Laura! The lingering nausea and light headedness felt like it was never going away. I won’t be making that mistake again!

Glad you are ok. You looked great at the race – you don’t normally run in a skirt. That volunteer does look a bit worried.
Congrats on finishing your 6th Half this year! You’re awesome!

I’ve been trying running skirts and finally found the brand (Lulu) I like that fits comfortably for any distance. Thanks Carrie!!

Thank you for sharing this. I’m getting ready to run my 1st race in a long time – a 4-ish mile trail run in the middle of a heat wave tomorrow morning. After reading your story, I’m going to focus on keeping my pace the same as my regular runs and allowing myself to warm up. I’m also going to bring a water bottle along. Normally, I don’t run with water, though I would hate for this to be the time when I truly needed water.

Hi Barb. How did your race go? I’m sure it felt great after not running for awhile. The heat has been brutal! I don’t normally run with water either but now I take it with me even for short runs.
Can’t wait to hear how your race went!

Awesome job! Way to go on 3rd place! Yes, I have felt like I was going to lose it in a race. Usually the shorter distance ones where I go all out. Blech!

Blech is right. And the lingering nausea feels like it’s never going away. I will never make that mistake again!

Wow that is inspiring! I can’t imagine having to run and be nauseous! Congrats to placing 3rd.

I am not a runner, but hope to be one day. I am just now starting to realize the importance of getting healthy so that I can do this- my inspiration for getting into shape is a book I just finished reading titled,”Get Well & Stay Well” by Steve Amoils, M.D. & Sandi Amoils, M.D.. I just wanted you to know that I enjoyed reading your post and did get some insight from it. Thank you.

Hi Tina! How did your race go? I know the heat is coming but it seems to catch me off guard every year. Drink early and often is my new motto and I carry water with me no matter how short the run/race is.
I’m checking my WP comment plugin. Would you mind sending me an email when (and if) you get this? Thanks!
